Brains or Beauty?
I never wanted to be a model when I was younger. There were the small facts that I'm not that tall, I don't wear heels, and I've never liked having my picture taken, but I would have much rather won a Nobel Prize that graced the pages of a magazine.
To be overly simplistic, my motto was "Brains, not beauty."
Which is, like, all well and good, but I still secretly harbored a fantasy of getting some glamorous photo shoot and letting someone wax my eyebrows and being in a magazine. They have sexy firemen photo spreads- why not sexy women scientists?
Truth be told, I'll probably never be in a photo spread, and that's fine. But I learned this morning that I made it into Glamour magazine's online health blog!
You can see the article Whoa: Even Ancient Roman Women Worried About Being Thin Enough.
This same post is also on the blog HealthyGirl.org (same author!) Body Image News: Even Ancient Women Were Obsessed with Their Weight
I guess maybe I should try modeling this t-shirt?

Congratulations!!! That's really exciting!!!
I've had similar secret desires to yourself :). I like to write and really want to start publishing academic articles (and finally have opportunities to do so). I know that what is written lasts far longer and impacts far more people than a picture or similar... but its hard to remember that on the crappy days when you're "just a woman" (rather than it specifically being about ed's or sexuality or anything else like that, just the dreams of a little girl or young woman) and want to resemble one that is recognised to be attractive enough to "make it" kinda thing!!!
Super cool Carrie! Well done :D
xo
Nice! Good owrk:)
Heh cute T-shirt.
But I think you should live out that fantasy of yours. Maybe not be in a magazine but... Go to open castings, get into the environment and try it for fun! I wasn’t tall enough either but they just put me in heels –took the shots and I was on my way. From my ekspirince –I would NEVER go into modelling. It’s too hard in many ways, but at least I did it. It can be quite uplifting to live out a hidden fantasy :)
And yes -I think women can be sexy and smart! And in fact I think most women are!
Love Cille
Sorry that's "experience" :)
Congrats! And I love the shirt :)
Seriously. I want that shirt. I neeeeeed that shirt.
Where can I buy one????
it seems like Glamour is beginning to expand its vision of beauty from size-nothing model to size anything woman.
glad they're reading your blog -- lots to learn from you!
CONGRATULATIONS
Well done Carrie :)
I would love one of those tee shirts... After worrying incessently about my nerdiness as a kid, I've now accepted myself as a proud adult nerd!
Congratulations! Good for you!
Awesome! Congrats!
(I think that the reason I'm obsessed with watching Top Model is because I secretly want to have a really cool photo shoot where they give me wild, "fierce" makeup and hair and then take and hang me off the side of a building all dressed like a superhero... I sit on the couch and practice my "modeling" faces while I watch... I can't believe that I'm admitting this!)
Congrats! That's wonderful. :)
Great T-shirt, Carrie (I have a tank that says the same thing!). And I'm happy to have linked up with you!
